Mr. Barack Obama, President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Blvd. NW
Washington, D. C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

It is with tremendous interest that I watch you struggle with the Syrian gas situation.  I know you are grasping for Gandhian answers.  Allow me to suggest that you place your energies behind the development of Mahatma Gandhi's "peace brigade" concept.

The peace brigades are made up, in Gandhiji's mind, of people dressed in white (as an identifier), non-drinkers of alcohol (to ensure a clear head at all times), etc., and they are trained in the ways of Truth and non-violence.  They stand as physical and moral barriers between warring factions, a human wall respected by the very nature for their objectivity in focusing on the best outcomes for all involved in a dispute.

To be credible, the peace brigade members would have to have autonomy from governments, including the United Nations, so that they could not be seen as political operatives on behalf of any interest other than Truth Only, who is God.  I think Arun Gandhi, here in America, and a Dr. Kumar from India, would provide you insights on how best to proceed.

Most respectfully,

P. S.  I am informed by a contact in India that a living peace brigade member of Mahatma Gandhi's has much to tell, if you are interested.

A Gandhian Perspective on the Syrian Gas Situation

As a student of Mahatma Gandhi's ideas of Truth and non-violence, I am taken back to Gandhiji's instruction to the Jews of Hitler's death camps.  He instructed that the best choice for the Jews in Hitler's ghettos would have been to throw themselves upon the "butcher's knife," that this would have so turned the stomach of the world as to cause all respect for Hitler to be abandoned.

This is similar to the Amish practice of shunning, wherein a person acting so egregious to the peace of the community (in Hitler's sense the community of nations) is simply quietly boycotted by the entire community.  The damage done by the Syrian government to itself has already been done.  The cameras told the story to the world, and the time line of keeping inspectors out while shelling of the gassed area by the Syrian government buried their moral authority in the world.  Mr. Assad, it is over.

There is no need to fire a weapon at Syria, as Truth has weighed you, Mr. Assad, and you have been found wanting.  Truth Only, who is God, now alone stands as your judge.  And there is no where to run.

Good Work From A Libertarian Leader

Toward A Quaker Economic Policy

January 7, 2013 at 10:51pm
America has several denominations that are pacifistic, or nearly so, but the one most well-known for that aspect of their creed is the Quakers.
This refusal to use violence (at least directly, a distinction I'll clarify in a moment) makes even more inspiring the Quaker participation in The Underground Railroad, because it meant that, were any of the many Quakers who participated in that glorious endeavor ever attacked by slave-hunters, their creed would have prohibited them from defending themselves -- and many slave-hunters were little better than mad dogs.
But what is puzzling about some (definitely not all!) Quakers is that they not only countenance, but, in many cases, encourage, force -- that is, force used by Government to promote ends they find desirable.    Morally/ethically speaking, of course, there is no distinction  between coercion and force employed by politicians and the same means used by private citizens.  Nor is there any moral/ethical distinction between violating Human Rights for noble goals and engaging in such violations for odious purposes.
To give a concrete example: what moral difference is there among the Barbary Pirates demanding "tribute money" to operate in "their' territory; the Mafia demanding "protection money" to operate in "its" territory; and The State demanding "sales tax" to operate in "its" territory?   Another example: what moral difference is there between a mugger using force to compel a person to finance the mugger's distaste for work, and a tax collector's use of force to compel a person to finance a hospital?   The philosophy of "the ends justify the means" is the ultimate amorality.
Given that, no Quaker -- indeed, no consistent pacifist of any variety -- should vote for any candidate willing to abridge Rights, regardless of the ends toward which such abuses are aimed.
That, of course, would disqualify virtually every candidate nominated by either tax-subsidized political party.   Although the Democrats and Republicans have agendas which differ somewhat, the method is the same: the initiation of force (as opposed to defensive or retaliatory force) against individuals or groups.
If one forswears using a tactic directly, is it not inconsistent (I will not invoke the term 'hypocritical' as many such individuals have never pondered the contradiction) to accept -- or worse, vote for -- the use of that tactic by politicians and bureaucrats?

For Human Rights,

Jeff Daiell

Calling for Planning for a Non-Violent March on the Texas State Capitol

As a Gandhian, my religious situation from Christ's Sermon on the Mount requires me to "swear not."  The paperwork from the Texas Secretary of State requires that I violate a central teaching of my religion to gain even ballot access and a credible chance that goes with that ballot access at being elected the Governor of Texas through the Libertarian Party system, the party I believe to be the last best hope for the freedom of mankind on earth.

Therefore, I am calling my advisors through the years to begin discussions on a  non-violent march on the State Capitol building of Texas to demand that I and others in future years be allowed ballot access in all Texas elections irregardless of religion.

Followup, Interesting Case:

Minersville School District v. Gobitis, 310 U.S. 586 (1940), was a decision by theSupreme Court of the United States involving the religious rights of public school students under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Court ruled that public schools could compel students—in this case, Jehovah's Witnesses—to salute theAmerican Flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance despite the students' religious objections to these practices. This decision led to increased persecution of Witnesses in the United States. The Supreme Court overruled this decision a mere three years later, inWest Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943).

My Recipe for Freeing the World from the State Conception of Life

1)  Get a paper copy of "The Kingdom Of God Is Within You," by Leo Tolstoy, and read every word.  (This is the book attributed with transforming the lawyer M. K. Gandhi into the Mahatma of India, and these are the tactics central to freeing India from British rule.)

2)  Begin to learn trades that will allow you to be paid in cash (i. e. tire repair, sewing, car repair, carpentry, leather tanning, shoe making, leather-goods making, welding, motion picture production, etc.).

3)  Get yourself a spinning wheel and begin experimenting with making khadi cloth (home spun cloth) and using it for gifts and currency among your close relations and friends.

4) Sign your name as little as you can tolerate.  (Signing your name is a central way the state and its corporations gain control over you.)

5)  "Swear not"/ Do not take oaths (ends the state and all its systems of violence).

And keep in touch.
